The Story of BB Designs & Angela Johnson
About the Owner/ Artist, Angela Johnson – I have had a love for painting since I got my first art set from my uncle at 8 years old. Growing up I aspired to be an artist. In High school, I attended an advertising design program at Oneida County BOCES with the hopes of turning my art into my career. During my senior year, the evening of my senior ball, tragedy struck my family with the loss of my mom who had been battling Multiple Sclerosis for the majority of her adult life. In dealing with her loss, I found comfort in my artwork and was able to express myself in a way that was therapeutic. That is where I made the ultimate decision to pursue the arts for my career at Munson-Williams Proctor Institute where I completed my Associates Degree in Fine Art.
After graduating MWPAI, I enrolled at Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, FL for one semester before returning to Upstate NY where I received a degree in Business Management, followed by a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, while raising my son, Jacob. Unfortunately, raising a family on art was not possible.
Fast forward to 2014, with a completed education, a successful career in sales, and a growing young man, I couldn’t help but feel that something was missing. My art had been pushed to the side for all those years, and I craved that feeling. So I picked up the brush and began painting again. I posted a few of my designs on Facebook and low and behold people began responding positively, and asking if they were for sale.
In my mind, I was like, YES! Yes, they are! I realized that my dream was still alive and that I could create paintings and gifts that inspired people and made them smile. So, I began taking orders and arranging custom designs for interested parties. The multiple orders and demand for my work fed my painting addiction again. Now I wanted to make this work more than ever. It was at that
time that there was no looking back; BB Designs was formed.
The launch of BB Designs taught me there is no better time to start doing what you love than NOW. To find what you love and do it often. No matter what has happened in your life, no tragedy or ugliness can ruin your dream as long as you believe in yourself and what you can accomplish. If someone would have told me that I would have my own art business, studio, and be living out my dream, I would have never believed it. The support I have received from my family, friends, and customers is absolutely amazing and I will be forever grateful. I now have had the chance to paint with thousands of people, partnered with countless companies, created the Utica Love Artist group and coloring book, hosted multiple art shows, and continue to build meaningful partnerships within our community. My hope is to be able to continue to create for others and make people smile, and to, of course…
